Beth felt weak with disappointment and longing as she listened to Jack’s footsteps on the porch. Why hadn’t he kissed her? She knew he’d wanted to. She could see the wanting in his eyes.

Trembling, she sank back against the table and told herself she should be glad he hadn’t. Because even though Jack had never so much as touched her, it would have been nearly impossible to stop if he had. And there was no way they could have gone farther than a kiss, not with the kids upstairs.

But even as she told herself this, she wondered why he hadn’t at least made an attempt. Had she misinterpreted his feelings? Had she told herself he wanted to kiss her simply because that’s what she wanted to believe?

Around and around her thoughts went, and there were no satisfactory answers. Finally she roused herself, poured and drank a glass of water, shut and locked the kitchen door, then slowly made her way upstairs.

That night her dreams were filled with images of Jack and the day they’d spent together. And in her dream, he didn’t walk away from her after they’d put the children to bed. Instead, he took her into his arms and his mouth and hands claimed her with thrilling dominance. She whimpered in her sleep as the Beth in her dream surrendered to her passions with no thought to consequences—something a wide-awake Beth would never be able to do.
